A mechanism for generating creativity from diversity

“It is heterogeneity that fosters creativity.”* Yamagata University President Hidetoshi Tamate made this statement in his 2022 Yamagata Creative City Interview, and it is true that bringing dissimilar elements together can result in new and unexpected forms of creation. As Yamagata’s Creative City Center, this is exactly what Q1 considers its mission: to function as a mechanism that brings many diverse and different elements together in one place. The businesses and artists you find at Q1 engage in ventures and generate output that is innovative and exciting. The people who visit Q1 are a heterogeneous mix of children and adults of all ages, local residents and out-of- town visitors, and just about everyone you can think of. And the Q1 facility can be used for an incredible diversity of purposes. It has rooms you can rent as an office or a less conventional workspace. It can serve as a school, a marketplace, or a place to conduct business. You can screen films, hold concerts, conduct seminars and workshops. It can be a playground, or a place to cook, dine or hold wine tastings. It is this diversity – in the people who gather at Q1 and the ways in which it is used – that enables Q1 to thrive as an ecosystem that grows ever richer, ever more dynamic, and ever more conducive to new and exciting encounters.
