それは、記憶と歴史を継ぎつつ
新しい物語を刻むものである

山形市立第一小学校旧校舎の誕生は1927（昭和2）年、96年前のこと。以来子供たちの学び舎として親しまれ約80年。その役目を終えてから文化財的価値を認められ保存・利用されてさらに10数年、という歳月を経て、創造都市拠点「やまがたクリエイティブシティセンターQ1」として再生したのが昨年、2022年のことでした。そのQ1オープンから1周年を迎えた2023年9月。グランマルシェという祭りに現れたのは、数多く並んだ出店テントで買い物する人、ウッドデッキでくつろぐ人、流しそうめんにチャレンジする子、ピアノに聴き惚れる人…たくさんの市民の皆さんが思い思いのやり方で「今ここにいること」を楽しんでいる様子でした。かつて学校であった場所が、かつて学校であった記憶と物語を受け継ぎながら、学校とはまた別の使われ方をするものとして再生したことにより、建築物としてのいのちを繋いで、ふたたび多くの市民に愛されてゆく。しかも、かつてのままであったなら生まれなかったであろう新しい営みや交流や賑わいが生まれては重なって、ひとつの素敵な絵画みたいな新しい風景をつくっている。「2023年にはこんな祭りがあったんだよ」という記憶をもまた刻みこみ、さらにQ1は100周年へ、そしてその先へ、時を紡いでいきます。

A tapestry of memories, history –
and new stories

96 years have passed since Yamagata Municipal Daiichi Elementary School first opened its doors in 1927, and for its first 80 years, it was a place of learning for local children. Recognized as a historical building, it continued to be maintained and utilized for about 15 years after that, and then in 2022, it was reborn as the Yamagata Creative City Center Q1. The “ROOTS & Technique” Q1 Grand Market, held in September 2023, marked Q1’s first anniversary, and this three-day market was crowded with shoppers browsing through tents and stalls, people lounging on the wood decks, children using their chopstick skills to catch “nagashi somen” noodles, and music lovers listening raptly to piano performances. Everyone was free to enjoy the market in their own way, and there was a sense that people were just glad to be there. This Q1 Center, formerly an elementary school and still vividly embroidered with the memories and stories of that long chapter of its history, now enjoys a new life as a different facility, which ensures the continued preservation of this building and allows local residents the opportunity to enjoy it anew. Q1’s role as a Creative City Center also makes possible many endeavors and encounters that would not have been conceivable before, bringing new vitality and adding new landscapes to the rich tapestry of this facility’s history. Just as we remember 2023 for the Grand Market which took place this year, so too will there be new stories as we weave our way into the future – towards the 100th year anniversary soon to come, and beyond.
