それは、新しい「Q」を
増殖させる生きものである

「Q1（キューイチ）」という名の理由は、ここが「旧一小」であるから。約百年近くにもわたって市民に愛されてきたこの建物（と物語）をこれからも大切に残していきたいという願いが込められているから、です。その想いの上にクリエイティブ拠点らしく「新しい問いが始まるところ（Question1）」という意味が重ねられています。加えて、2022年9月のオープンセレモニーで東北芸術工科大学の中山ダイスケ学長は「『Q』には Quality（品質）とQuest（探究）という意味もある」とさらに多義的に語られましたし、定期開催されるマルシェ「Q市」では新しい交流が育まれたり、こどもたちの創造性を刺激する「PlayQ」では楽しそうな企画が組まれていたり、レンタル空間「StudioQ」が市民に活用されたり、そして今まさにこの瞬間にあなたがこの「タブロイドQ」を読んでくださっていたり…と、着実に「Q」がいろんなかたちになって広がっています。Qが多様化し増殖するほど、このまちは「創造都市やまがた」らしくなり、シビックプライドが醸成されてゆくはず。ですから、さあ、ますます「Q」を楽しみましょう。ともに、新しい「Q」を見つけたり、つくったりを繰り返しながら。

The Diversification and Evolution of “Q”

Q1 was originally the Yamagata Municipal Daiichi Elementary School, and the Q1 (“Kyu-ichi”) facility name was derived from “Kyu-Issho,” the familiar name by which this school was known. However, not only does the Q1 name pay homage to this school building (and its story), beloved by local citizens for almost 100 years, but it also stands for “Question 1,” the symbolic “first question” which queried how this Creative City Center could serve as a creative hub for the people of this city. In addition, in an address given at the Q1 opening ceremony in September 2022, Tohoku University of Art and Design President Daisuke Nakayama noted that “Q” also stands for concepts such as “quality” and “quest.” “Q” continues to take on new shades of meaning as we come to associate it with events and projects such as the Q Ichi markets, which foster new meetings and interactions, PlayQ, a series of fun activities designed to stimulate the creativity of children, and Studio Q, a rental space available for local citizens. And anyone reading this text is certainly aware of the existence of Tabloid Q, this facility’s free paper. The diversification and proliferation of the meanings and nuances embodied in “Q” accompanies Yamagata city’s further evolution into a Creative City, something which is sure to inspire civic pride among its citizens. So let us continue to work with one another to discover all the “Qs” there are for us to explore, create and enjoy together.
