それは、市民一人ひとりの 日々の喜びと共にある

「創造都市」という言葉は、どこか抽象的に聞こえます。そもそも「創造」とは、才能ある一部の選ばれた（アーティストのような）人だけが行なうもの、と思う方もいるかもしれません。しかし、そうではありません。この街をつくっているのは、私たち市民一人ひとりの暮らしです。生きること、誰かの役に立つこと、新しい一歩を踏み出すこと。そして、日々の中に小さな喜びを見つけること。その一つひとつがこの街の未来を少しずつ形づくっています。

Q1に掲げられたミッション・ステートメントに、「創造都市やまがたは、市民一人ひとりがユネスコ創造都市ネットワークの意義を共有し、世界と交流します」とあります。ここで言う「共有」とは、理念を暗記することではなく、自分が暮らす街の魅力に気づき、その価値を誰かと分かち合うこと。また「世界と交流する」とは、海外へ出ていくだけでなく、この街に生きる豊かさに気づいた人たちの姿が、山形の魅力として世界へ届いていくことでしょう。創造都市とは、誰かがつくるものではなく、この街に暮らす私たち一人ひとりがよりよく生きようとする、その日々の重なり合いなのです。

Building this creative city through our daily lives and daily joys

The term “creative city” can sound somewhat abstract. Some might even assume that “creation” is  something that only a select, talented few—artists, for example—are capable of.  But that couldn’t be farther from the truth, because this creative city is the aggregate of the daily lives of every citizen who resides here. We live, we find ways to be of use to one another, we take new steps forward—and we discover the small joys that exist in everyday life. It is the sum of these elements that gives shape, little by little, to this city’s future. 

The Q1 Mission Statement states that in Creative City Yamagata, “every citizen shares in the significance of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and engages with the world.” Here, “share” doesn’t imply that we will be given a philosophy to memorize, but embodies the hope that all of us who live in Yamagata can recognize what is special about this city, and share this with others. And “engage with the world” is not a simple directive to travel overseas; it’s the idea that by appreciating the richness of life here, we ourselves become capable of reflecting and conveying Yamagata’s appeal to the rest of the world. A creative city is not something that someone builds for us—it’s the accumulation of the daily lives we spend trying to make the most of our time, and this place.
