Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival 2025 Concludes
The eight-day film festival, which kicked off on October 9, came to a successful close. From the opening ceremony and opening screening on day one, audiences packed the Yamagata Central Public Hall, and by the final day of encore screenings for the award-winning films, total attendance had topped 26,000, with participants coming from Japan and around the world. Festival posters with a bold photographic design of river stones were displayed across town, most prominently around the five screening venues. Participants wore all-access Festival Passes with the same design around their necks as they hurried through the city center from venue to venue, greeted by volunteers in maroon staff T-shirts.

The official festival poster used images of stones collected from the Mamigasaki riverbed. Designed by Fuko Toshima, a third-year student at Tohoku University of Art and Design, it was a familiar sight on the streets of Yamagata last autumn.
Participants included local residents who have been attending the festival for decades, as well as visitors from afar who set aside every other autumn for Yamagata and book their lodging early. There were even longtime fans returning after 30 years, delighted to find the soba shops and bars they remembered still standing in a changed cityscape. Devoted film buffs headed to the Yamagata Citizens’ Hall every day for a rare collection of works documenting American society and culture from the 1960s onward. Students and young people from across Japan, and from neighboring countries such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea, planned their days carefully, hopping from venue to venue—much as one would at a music festival—to fit in as many films as possible. First-timers filled the seats too, taking advantage of a day off to catch a film or two from Japan or Yamagata.
One of the major draws of this festival is its flexibility. To help attendees get the most out of their all-access passes and ticket bundles, advance seat reservations are not accepted, allowing people to slip into larger venues right before a screening starts. On the other hand, this system caused some inconvenience at Forum Yamagata, where the 200-seat theater reached full capacity multiple times, creating long lines outside and leaving some people unable to get in.

The 15 films in the International Competition, the festival’s main program, were each screened twice at the Central Public Hall and the Citizens’ Hall, drawing a combined audience of about 8,000. The Grand Prize, the Robert and Frances Flaherty Prize, went to the 3.5-hour epic Direct Action. An immersive portrait of a community of French activists taking a stand against environmental destruction, the film captures not only their struggles but also their self-sufficient everyday lives, in which they put their ideals directly into practice. Expressing his delight at finally visiting Yamagata, director Ben Russell took part in an animated discussion after one of the screenings.

In addition to the screenings, the festival offered many other events. Discussions were held daily in the Q1 theater space and event space, as well as in nearby cafés. The Yamagata Creative Cities International Conference 2025, co-organized with the Yamagata Creative City Promotion Council, commemorated the UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. A film archive specialist from Busan, South Korea, and several experts from across Japan shared how they preserve, exhibit, and make use of regional moving-image materials, including films held by local TV stations and materials left behind by filmmakers with ties to those towns.
“Yamagata Rough Cut!” also marked its eighth edition. In this program, filmmakers and audiences view short, unfinished films (“rough cuts”) together, uncovering new perspectives and ideas in the discussions that follow. To facilitate this exchange, a Japanese–English simultaneous interpretation system was set up at the venues—which took some creative problem-solving. Thanks to the program’s loyal following and the free admission, the rooms were packed to overflowing at every session, and the atmosphere had the charged energy of a film festival at its best.

At theaters and other venues around the city center, participants from across Japan and around the world came together with guest directors and festival volunteers to meet, talk, and connect through film. The next festival is scheduled for October 2027—stay tuned!
